    Weightlifting, and fans were disappointed this weekend when the world's strongest man, Olympic and World super heavyweight champion Vasili Alekseev of the Soviet Union refused to take part in an international competition in Greece. Alekseev, described by fellow competitors as "gloomy and introspective", said he had not trained enough to be able to compete in the two day event in Athens. But, it went ahead without its star performer.

    SYNOPSIS: The competition, at the Milon Sporting Club, attracted about 40 weightlifters from eleven countries. They included Israel and Turkey, as well as several European nations. Here, Hoeg of Denmark lifts his way to third place in the light heavyweight contest.

    Serjukov of the Soviet Union won the heavyweight section with this lift of 290 kgs (640 pounds)
    But not everyone was as successful. Sizopoulos of Greece had trouble with this lift.

    Wesowski of Poland produced this lift to win third place in the middleweight class.

    Poland also figured strongly in the middle heavyweights. Korysiewicz of Poland lifting 743 pounds (337 kilograms) to take first prize. The competition was organised by the Greek Weightlifting Federation and attracted a top line up of judges, including Gottfried Schodl of Austria, President of the International Weightlifting Federation.
