  • Description

Mother Teresa--a missionary India and winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize--received another honour on Wednesday (24 October). At a civic reception in Calcutta, thousands of her adopted countrymen turned up to congratulate their "Saint of the slums".

SYNOPSIS: The 69 year-old missionary came to India fifty years ago to embark on a lifetime of helping the poor and needy in the slums of Calcutta. She says that she is unworthy of a Nobel prize, but has accepted it to highlight the problems of the sick and homeless throughout the world.

The Marxist government of West Bengal State had organised the reception to pay tribute to Mother Teresa's recognition by the outside world--even though in her adopted country her good works and love of humanity have been recognised for many years. Mother Teresa is due to go to Oslo next month to receive her 191,000 dollar (U.S.) prize. But, she says, she intends to use the money to build homes for leper families and other destitutes.
