  • Description

The Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia Mr Lubomir Strougal arrived in Tokyo on Monday (12 November) on a five day official visit to Japan. Mr Strougal, accompanied by several Czech ministers, was greeted by Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira and members of the Japanese cabinet who made their first public appearance since the formation of a new government following the October general election.

SYNOPSIS: Mr Strougal met the Japanese Prime Minister in the grounds of Tokyo's Akasaka Palace. The two leaders will discuss the development of closer trade and cultural relations during Mr. Strougal's visit. The two countries have a history of co-operation dating back to the founding of the Czechoslovakian state in 1918 when Japan was one of the first nations to recognise the new independent Czech government.

During his stay, Mr. Strougal was scheduled to attend an audience with the Emperor and Empress at the Imperial Palace, and to tour several factories. It was the second visit of a Czech head of state to Japan; in 1970 the previous Czech leader, General Ludvik Svoboda, attended the opening of the World Exposition in Osaka.
