The Italian Foreign Minister Mr. Giuseppe Medici, has been holding talks in Cairo with his Egyptian counterpart, Dr. Mohamed Hassan El-Zayyat on the Middle-East situation.
Mr. Medici arrived in Cairo on Friday (1 February) to begin a five-day official visit at Dr. Zayyat's invitation.
The talks are a continuation of discussions last September when Dr. Zayyat visited Rome.
The two ministers are expected to discuss the role of the European Common Market countries in helping to bring about a peaceful Middle-East settlement.
Italy is particularly interested in the reopening of the Suez Canal, which has remained closed since the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. Italy's economy has been suffering because of the waterway's closure.
SYNOPSIS: In Cairo, Italy's Foreign Minister Mr. Giuseppe Medici has begun a five-day visit during which he will be holding talks with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Doctor Mohamed Hassan El-Zayyat, on the Middle-East situation. Mr. Medici's arrival in Cairo last Friday followed an invitation from Doctor Zayyat, who spent a short time in Rome last September on his way to the United Nations.

One of the subjects expected to be discussed is the role of the European Common Market countries in helping to bring about a peaceful Middle-East settlement. Of particular interest to Italy is the reopening of the Suez Canal the closure of which during the nineteen-sixty-seven Arab-Israeli war, affected Italy's economy.
