  • Description

India's historic city of Madras suffered severe flooding recently, following a 10-inch rainfall in 24 hours and the overflowing of the normally calm rivers of south Krishna, Kauveri and Godavari.

Hundreds of houses were to be seen surrounded by water November 13, and victims struggled in the waters to retrieve whatever possessions they could. Much of the city was under 6 feet of water.

Immediate Government aid was given to the homeless - thousands of whom had evacuated the city at the first sign of flooding and local officials started to assess the extent of the damage. A bridge across the River Coovaum was completely swept away.
