  • Description

ARRIVAL OF MR. SMRKOVSKY AT COMMUNIST CENTRAL COMMITTEE BUILDING; BRATISLAVA, BLOOD ON STREET; TANKS IN BRATISLAVA; SOVIET DIPLOMAT, MR. VASEV, INTERVIEWED IN LONDON (SOF).

VASEV: NOBODY IS GOING TO MAKE ANYBODY TOE THE LINE. IT IS A MUTUALLY MADE AGREEMENT WHICH BOTH PARTIES HAVE CONTRACTED TO UNDERTAKE. IT IS A CONTINUATION OF PREVIOUS DISCUSSIONS; THE COMMUNIQUE SPECIFICALLY MENTIONS THE CIERNA TALKS, THE BRATISLAVA ARRANGEMENT, DECLARATION, SO THIS IS A STAGE. SO IF ONE APPROACHES AGREEMENTS AS TO WHO TOES WHOSE LINE THEN ONE DOESN'T NEITHER UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF RELATIONSHIPS NOR WILL GO VERY FAR.

A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WERE REPORTED TO HAVE DIED IN VIOLENCE, INCLUDING A YOUTH WHO WAS SAID TO HAVE BEEN SHOT AFTER REMONSTRATING WITH SOVIET TROOPS.

IN LONDON TONIGHT (TUESDAY) A COUNSELLOR AT THE SOVIET EMBASSY, MR. VLADILEN VASEV, DENIED IN A TELEVISION INTERVIEW, THAT THE LATEST AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE SOVIET UNION AND CZECHOSLOVAKIA MEANT THAT THE CZECHS WOULD BE PLACED IN A COMPROMISING SITUATION.
