    Background: When Skylab is orbited next year, the ability to rescue astronauts in space will become a limited reality.

    Skylab, an experimental space station will be place din earth orbit primarily to conduct scientific and medical investigations.

    The first manned missing, with three astronauts -- Paul White, Peter Conrad, and Dr. Joe Kerwin -- will last up to 28 days. They second and third 3-man missions are planned for 56 days and will be launched 90 days apart.

    Experiments are currently being conducted at the National Aeronautical and space agency. Marshall Space-Flight Center at Huntsville, Alabama, U.S.A.

    The selected astronauts are undergoing tests under conditions of simulated weightlessness. There are two chief ways of simulating weightlessness -- using an aircraft on a freefall parabola, and underwater in a neutral-buoyancy tank. The latter method was chosen by NASA because much longer periods of weightlessness can be maintained.

    SYNOPSIS: This isn't a television control room, but a control room at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama where astronauts, training for next year's Skylab mission are monitored. Skylab is an experimental space station which will be placed in orbit next year.

    The neutral-buoyancy simulator, which the National Aeronautical Space Agency uses to simulate weightlessness, is filled with one-and-a-half million gallons of water. It has the distinct advantage over weightlessness simulated by an aircraft in a freefall parabola, in that weightlessness can be prolonged indefinitely. The state of weightless, of buoyancy, is achieved with the help of pressurised suits, weighted by lead, which astronauts don before each dive.

    When Skylab is orbited next year, one of its chief concerns will be to measure human adaptability to prolonged space flight. It will also provide the first means by which astronauts may be rescued in space. The first manned mission, with three astronauts -- Paul White, Peter Conrad, and Dr. Joe Karwin -- will last over two weeks. The two other planned mission will take place ninety days apart. They will also be manned by crews of three.
