  • Description

A South Korean Red Cross delegation left the border village of Panmunjom on Tuesday (29 August) for the North Korean capital of Pyongyang to begin full-scale negotiations on re-uniting families divided by the 38th parallel.

The meeting, which began on Wednesday (30 August), is the first formal conference between North and South since Korea was left divided at the end of the Second Word War. Its estimated ten million relatives are separated.

The Vice-president of the South Korean Red Cross Society, Mr. Bum-suk Lee, led the 34-man party from Seoul across the line in Panmunjom marking the border. He was greeted by the chief North Korean delegate to the talks, Mr. Tae-hui Kim.

North Korean children gave flowers to the South Korean delegated, advisers and about 20 newsmen accompanying the official group.

The talks come after a year of preliminary negotiations in which it was agreed that the conference sessions would alternate between Pyongyang and Seoul. The second round of talks will begin in Seoul on september 13.
