The Prime Minister of Israel, Mrs. Golda Meir, arrived in Tel-Aviv last night after a visit to President Nixon in Washington. She was met at the airport by government ministers and immediately went into consultations about the new developments in neighbouring Jordan.
Mrs. Meir has been to America for talks with President Nixon about the stalled Middle East Peace Talks and reported Egyptian violations of the cease fire. She reported that there were still difference between israel and the United States but that they would not blemish the friendship between the two countries. Events in Jordan were giving much more cause for concern last night and today. More than 200 Syrian tanks were reported to have entered Jordan territory and to have deployed round Irbid, only fifteen miles (25 kilometres) from the Israeli border.
Today political commentators were reporting that it was unlikely that Israel would intervene unless it felt its security threatened.
