The Standing Committee of the 17-nation Council of Europe is holding its first-ever meeting in West Berlin. The meeting began on Tuesday (July 6) and will continue until Friday (July 9).
Three of the Council's other major committees are also meeting in West Berlin's Congress Hall. They are the Political Affairs Committee, the Economic Affairs and Development Committee and the Regional Planning and Local Authorities Committee.
The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly recently decided to lighten the load of its plenary sessions in Strasbourg -- the Council's headquarters -- and arrange to hold inter-session meetings of its Standing Committee in cities other than Strasbourg.
The East German Foreign Ministry has already protested strongly against these meetings being held in West Berlin.
