TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ 1): KRAFT: "FROM OUR VIEWPOINT WE STILL FEEL CONFIDENT THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THE EIGHT DAYS, AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE STRIVING FOR AT THIS MOMENT. WE HAVE STOPPED MOST OF THE EXPERIMENTS THAT REQUIRE ANY FUEL AT THIS TIME. WE FEEL THAT WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED A FAIRLY LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE EXPERIMENTS THAT WE WANTED TO OBTAIN ON THIS FLIGHT AND NOW THE MAJOR OBJECTIVE AND THE MAJOR EXPERIMENT IS THE EIGHT DAYS OF FLIGHT SO WE WANT TO STRIVE TO GET THAT OBJECTIVE ACCOMPLISHED. THERE IS NO PROBLEM IN TERMS OF SAFETY OF FLIGHT. WE STILL ARE IN THE POSITION OF STILL HAVING TWO FUEL CELLS THAT WE CAN BRING BACK ON THE LINE AT ANY TIME. THE POWER OUTPUT IS FINE, FUEL CELLS ARE WORKING OKAY, AND WE STILL HAVE THE BATTERIES WHICH WE CAN USE FOR A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME SHOULD WE EVEN LOSE OUR CELLS. SO FROM THE STANDPOINT OF THE RECOVERY OF THE SPACECRAFT THERE IS NO PROBLEM."

Background: THE GEMINI 5 SPACE MISSION, WHICH YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) BECAME THE LONGEST MANNED FLIGHT IN HISTORY, IS NOW BEING PROGRAMMED TO REMAIN ALOFT FOR THE FULL EIGHT DAYS AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED.

SINCE THE LAUNCHING NEARLY SEVEN DAYS AGO THERE HAS BEEN SOME DOUBT AS TO HOW LONG THE MISSION WOULD CONTINUE. SHORTLY AFTER LAUNCHING TROUBLE DEVELOPED IN THE NEW TYPE OF GENERATING SYSTEM BEING USED, AND IT APPEARED THAT THE PILOTS WOULD RETURN TO EARTH AFTER ONLY A FEW ORBITS.

HOWEVER, THE GENERATING SYSTEM THEN SEEMED TO CORRECT ITSELF AND THE ORBITING CONTINUED.

NOW, IT HAS BEEN FOUND THE SPACE CRAFT IS RUNNING LOW ON FUEL.

A DECISION IS TO BE MADE EARLY TOMORROW MORNING (1100 GMT) WHETHER TO END THE FLIGHT TOMORROW OR CONTINUE IT FOR THE FULL EIGHT DAYS.

ALL EXPERIMENTS ABOARD THE SPACECRAFT WHICH REQUIRE FUEL HAVE BEEN STOPPED AND SPACE ENGINEERS AND ADMINISTRATORS ARE NOW CONCENTRATING ON KEEPING THE FLIGHT GOING UNTIL SUNDAY.
