  • Description

THE GEMINI 5 SPACE MISSION, WHICH YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) BECAME THE LONGEST MANNED FLIGHT IN HISTORY, IS NOW BEING PROGRAMMED TO REMAIN ALOFT FOR THE FULL EIGHT DAYS AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED.

SINCE THE LAUNCHING NEARLY SEVEN DAYS AGO THERE HAS BEEN SOME DOUBT AS TO HOW LONG THE MISSION WOULD CONTINUE. SHORTLY AFTER LAUNCHING TROUBLE DEVELOPED IN THE NEW TYPE OF GENERATING SYSTEM BEING USED, AND IT APPEARED THAT THE PILOTS WOULD RETURN TO EARTH AFTER ONLY A FEW ORBITS.

HOWEVER, THE GENERATING SYSTEM THEN SEEMED TO CORRECT ITSELF AND THE ORBITING CONTINUED.

NOW, IT HAS BEEN FOUND THE SPACE CRAFT IS RUNNING LOW ON FUEL.

A DECISION IS TO BE MADE EARLY TOMORROW MORNING (1100 GMT) WHETHER TO END THE FLIGHT TOMORROW OR CONTINUE IT FOR THE FULL EIGHT DAYS.

ALL EXPERIMENTS ABOARD THE SPACECRAFT WHICH REQUIRE FUEL HAVE BEEN STOPPED AND SPACE ENGINEERS AND ADMINISTRATORS ARE NOW CONCENTRATING ON KEEPING THE FLIGHT GOING UNTIL SUNDAY.
