Background: TWENTY MILES (32 KMS) NORTH OF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CAPITAL, SAIGON, LIES THE TOWN OF BIEN HOA.BY ASIAN STANDARDS, IT'S A SMALL SETTLEMENT, HOUSING ABOUT 5,000 PEOPLE.BUT IT LIES IN THE MEKONG DELTA, AND IN THE FORESTS NEARBY, AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES CONTINUE THEIR EFFORTS TO DEFEAT THE VIETCONG.THE TOWN HAS BECOME A HAVEN FOR REFUGEES - FIRST FOR THOSE WHO AT PARTITION IN 1954 DECIDED TO MOVE OUT OF NORTH VIETNAM, AND NOW, FOR FAMILIES UPROOTED FROM THEIR HOMES BY THE PRESENT FIGHTING.

IN A COUNTRY WHERE RELIGION IS VERY IMPORTANT, MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN BIEN HOA ARE ROMAN CATHOLICS.THE TOWN HAS MANY CHURCHES.THE HOMES TOO, REFLECT THE FAITH OF THE FAMILIES, AND IN MOST, THERE IS EITHER A CRUCIFIX OR A PICTURE OF CHRIST.

WHILE THE WAR GOES ON AROUND THEM, THE VILLAGERS MAINTAIN AN APPEARANCE OF OUTWARD CALM.WATER BUFFALOES ARE STILL ONE OF THE CHIEF BEASTS OF BURDEN, WHILE GRASS THATCH AND BAMBOO REMAIN THE CHIEF BUILDING MATERIALS.

THERE'S A FLOURISHING MARKET PLACE WHERE FARMERS HAGGLE WITH ONE ANOTHER OVER BARGAINS AND OVERALL AN AIR OF COMPARATIVE PROSPERITY.

REFUGEES CONTINUE TO ARRIVE IN BIEN HOA.MOST ARE ALLOWED TO STAY.BUT BEFORE THEY CAN, THEY MUST UNDERGO A SEARCHING ENQUIRY FROM GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.
