  • Description

Australian gold medallist, Linda McGill, became the first person to swim the thirty miles (48 kms) around Hong Kong island on Saturday (22 May).

The 29-year-old Miss. McGill spent seventeen hours in the water battling against a strong current and heavy seas.

Miss. McGill won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1962. After representing Australia in the Tokyo Olympics, she turned professional and has since entered almost every marathon swimming event in the world.

She has swum the English Channel several times. In 1967, she broke the channel swimming record with a time of nine hours 59 minutes. That record stood unbroken for eight years.
