Background: INTRODUCTION The Middle East -- and the wide-sweeping tour by new Lebanese Prime Minister Dr. Selim al-hoss in his search for funds to help rebuild the nation's broken economy. The reconstruction of Lebanon, devastated by nineteen months of civil war, will cost an estimated 2,200-million pounds sterling (four billion U.S. dollars)
SYNOPSIS: In Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, he and his party met a delegation headed by UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Maktoum ben Rashed al-Maktoum. A strong UAE negotiating team also included the Deputy Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, and Mr. Nasser al-Nuweis, President of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Arab Economic Development. The Lebanese prime Minister told newsmen he's urgently seeking immediate aid from individual nations for short-term needs. Pan-Arab long-tem aid could come later, he said. But earlier reports said that the seven Arab nations he'd already visited would prefer to channel all aid to Lebanon through a multilateral agency, such as a fund set up by the Arab League. Dr. al-Hoss visited Saudi Arabia, Libya, Egypt, Kuwait, Iran, Bahrain and Qatar before flying to Abu Dhabi.
