  • Description

KITWE, THE BIGGEST CENTRE ON THE RICH ZAMBIAN COPPERBELT, HAS COME OF AGE, AND PRESIDENT KAUNDA WAS THERE PERSONALLY TO PRESIDE OVER THE CERMONIES THAT MARKED THE OFFICIAL TRANSFORMATION FROM TOWN TO CITY.

KITWE IS THE BUSTLING HUB OF THE COPPERBELT, AND ITS CITIZENS TURNED OUT IN FORCE TO SEE THE PRESIDENT ARRIVE IN HIS OPEN CAR. AS HE CROSSED THE BOUNDARY INTO THE TOWN, PRESIDENT KAUNJA WAS MET BY THE MAYOR, COUNCILLOR KALYATI, WHO PRESENTED HIM WITH A COPPER KEY TO MAKE HIM A FREEMAN OF KITWE.

THEN THE PARTY DROVE ON PAST THE CHEERING CROWDS TO THE CITY COUNCIL OFFICES, WHERE THERE WAS A GUARD OF HONOUR TO INSPECT. A TELEVISION CAMERA TEAM WORKED FROM A CRANE OVERHEAD IN THE ZAMBIA TELEVISION SERVICE'S FIST LIVE OUTSIDE BROADCAST.

THE MAYORS AND TOWN CLERKS OF THE SEVEN OTHER MUNICIPALITIES IN ZAMBIA HAD TRAVELLED TO KITWE FOR THE OCCASION. THEY SAW THE PRESIDENT HAND OVER A COPPER CASKET CONTAINING A SCROLL, AND KITWE OFFICIALLY BECAME ZAMBIA'S SECOND CITY.

THE ONLY OTHER CITY IS THE CAPITAL, LUSAKA, WHICH WAS GRANTED THAT STATUS BY QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER DURING A ROYAL VISIT IN 1960. BOTH CITIES NOW HAVE POPULATIONS OF ABOUT 20,000.
