    FRANCE AND NIGERIA YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) FORMALLY RESUMED DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WHICH WERE BROKEN OFF IN JANUARY, 1961, FOLLOWING FRENCH ATOMIC TESTS IN THE SAHARA.

    AT A CEREMONY IN THE NIGERIAN CAPITAL, LAGOS, THE NEW FRENCH AMBASSADOR, M. MARC BARBEY, PRESENTED HIS CREDENTIALS TO THE HEAD OF THE NIGERIAN MILITARY GOVERNMENT, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL YAKUBU GOWON.

    M. BARBEY, PREVIOUSLY THE FRENCH AMBASSADOR TO BURUNDI, SAID HE HOPED CO-OPERATION BETWEEN FRANCE AND NIGERIA WOULD DEVELOP IN DIVERSE FIELDS, EMBRACING CULTURAL RELATIONS AND PARTICIPATION IN ECONOMIC EXPANSION.

    HE SPOKE OF PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S INTEREST IN AFRICA AND THE PLACE WHICH NIGERIA OCCUPIED IN THE CONTINENT.

    IN REPLY, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL GOWON TALKED ABOUT HIS COUNTRY'S TIES WITH FRANCE AND THE SIGNING LAST JULY OF AN ASSOCIATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN NIGERIA AND THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY.

    HE SAID THAT FRANCE AND NIGERIA SHARED IDENTICAL VIEWS IN A NUMBER OF AREAS IN WORLD AFFAIRS.
