Background: THE MANY DRAMATIC REPORTS OF ESCAPES AND ATTEMPTED ESCAPES THROUGH THE WALL ERECTED THROUGH BERLIN BY THE EAST GERMAN REGIME, HAS INEVITABLY RESULTED IN THE PRODUCTION OF A FEATURE FILM TELLING OF THE DRAMA AND ROMANCE OF ONE SUCH ESCAPE. THE FILM - CALLED "TUNNEL 28" - IS BEING MADE IN WEST BERLIN, VERY NEAR TO THE ACTUAL WALL.

UNDER AMERICAN DIRECTOR ROBERT SIOMAK, FILM STARS DON MURRAY OF AMERICA, AND CHRISTINE KAUFMANN OF GERMANY ARE ENACTING THE STORY OF A GROUP OF 28 PEOPLE WHO DUG A TUNNEL UNDER THE WALL FROM THE CELLAR OF A HOUSE IN EAST BERLIN.

IT TELLS OF A YOUNG EAST BERLINER WHO DROVE A TRUCK THROUGH THE WALL, BUT WHEN CLAMBERING FROM THE DRIVER'S CABIN ON THE WESTERN SIDE WAS SHOT BY EAST GERMAN BORDER GUARDS. HIS FRIEND, WHO REFUSED TO TAKE PART, IS EVENTUALLY PERSUADED BY THE DEAD BOY'S SISTER TO ATTEMPT AN ESCAPE. JOINED BY A GROUP OF RELATIVES AND FRIENDS, THEY DIG A TUNNEL UNDER THE WALL. THE HERO, PLAYED BY DON MURRAY, IS DIGGING ALONE ONE NIGHT WHEN HE BREAKS THROUGH INTO THE WESTERN SIDE. HE BRINGS BACK A HANDFUL OF GRASS TO HIS GIRL-FRIEND, PLAYED BY CHRISTINE KAUFMANN. MEANWHILE, THEY ARE BETRAYED, AND AS THE EAST GERMAN POLICE BREAK INTO THE HOUSE, ALL MAKE THEIR WAY SAFELY THROUGH THE TUNNEL, WITH THE HERO BRINGING UP THE REAR. HE IS ALMOST KILLED, WHEN THE POLICE FIRE AUTOMATIC WEAPONS DOWN THE TUNNEL AFTER HIM. BUT ALL ENDS WELL.
