  • Description

BRITAIN'S FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR. PATRICK GORDON WALKER, TODAY (MONDAY) LAUNCHED HIS CAMPAIGN TO WIN THE EAST LONDON SEAT OF LEYTON IN A BY-ELECTION WHICH WILL PROBABLY BE HELD ON JANUARY 21. THE SEAT HAS PREVIOUSLY BEEN HELD BY THE FORMER MR. R. SORENSEN - WHO HAS BECOME A LIFE PEER IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS.

THE ELECTION IS AN IMPORTANT ONE BECAUSE THE RESULT WILL BE THE FIRST POSITIVE INDICATION OF THE PUBLIC'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE NEW LABOUR GOVERNMENT. IT'S A TRADITIONAL LABOUR SEAT - AND MR. GORDON WALKER IS CONFIDENTLY EXPECTED TO WIN IT. IN THE OCTOBER ELECTION MR. SORENSEN'S MAJORITY HERE WAS NEARLY EIGHT THOUSAND: A DECLINE IN THIS WOULD COME AS A WELCOME NEWS TO THE RECENTLY DEFEATED CONSERVATIVE PARTY, BUT AN INCREASE IN THE MAJORITY WOULD ENDORSE THE GOVERNMENT'S VIEW THAT ITS ACTIONS SINCE TAKING OFFICE HAVE BEEN WIDELY APPROVED BY THE BRITISH PEOPLE.

MR. PATRICK GORDON WALKER WAS IN LEYTON THIS MORNING TO OPEN THE CAMPAIGN AND HE SPOKE WITH SOME OF THE CONSTITUENTS. REPORTS HAD CIRCULATED THAT BRITAIN'S FASCIST LEADER, MR. COLIN JORDAN WOULD CAMPAIGN AGAINST MR. GORDON WALKER IN LEYTON ON THE ISSUE OF IMMIGRATION - AND THE FIRST VOTER THE FOREIGN SECRETARY SPOKE TO BROUGHT UP THE QUESTION OF RACE RELATIONS:
THE FORMER MEMBER WISHED THE FOREIGN SECRETARY WELL IN HIS CAMPAIGN - AND AGAIN THE RACE ISSUE WAS MENTIONED AS THE TWO MEN LOOKED AT CRUDE FASCIST SYMBOLS PAINTED NEAR THE DOORS OF THE LABOUR PARTY CAMPAIGN HEADQUARTERS.

WHILE MR. GORDON WALKER WAS OPENING HIS CAMPAIGN WITH A NEWS CONFERENCE, THE FASCIST LEADER, MR. COLIN JORDAN ENTERED THE LABOUR PARTY HEADQUARTERS AND INTERRUPTED HIM. HE CALLED MR. GORDON WALKER A "DISGUSTING RACIAL TRAITOR". COMING OUT OF THE BUILDING HE SPOKE TO A SMALL CROWD:
AN OFFICIAL TRIED TO MOVE MR. JORDAN, WHO RESPONDED:
MR. GORDON WALKER WAS DEFEATED BY THE CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE AT SMETHWICK IN THE GENERAL ELECTION AMID SPECULATION THAT THE RACE ISSUE HAD INFLUENCED THE VOTING. SINCE OCTOBER HE HAS BEEN A GOVERNMENT MINISTER, BUT WITHOUT A SEAT IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS.
