  • Description

On the outskirts of Khartoum on Tuesday evening (27 July) a military court put Sudanese Communist Leader Khalik Mahgoub on trial for his life on charges that he masterminded last week's brief and abortive coup against President Nimeiry. The defendant had to hours in which to prepare his defence, and during the hearing emphatically and repeatedly denied charges of complicity. VISNEWS cameraman Pino Giambattista was among newsmen allowed into the courtroom for the start of the trial, but latter stages were conducted in secret with mahgoub finally being found guilty. Within a few hours of the decision the Communist leader was hanged. Journalists in Khartoum had earlier thought that Mahgoub's world-wide connections might well have brought a sentence to her than the death penalty. They now speculate that the Sudanese leaders may have been determined not to be influenced by foreign opinion on the matter.
