REPORTER: "King's widow Coretta and other members of the King family laid a wreath at his tomb in Atlanta. Mrs. King seized upon this, the 10th anniversary of her husband's death, to push for the passage of the Humphrey-Hawkins full employment bill to honour his memory.



"In Memphis, a memorial march was sponsored by the local union of municipal employees. Among its members are the black sanitation workers on whose behalf King came to Memphis when he was shot, standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. He was trying to get the workers better wages and working conditions. Black leaders agree that a lack of jobs and economic injustice, the reasons King came to Memphis, are still the biggest problem facing blacks today. Every year since King was killed, there have been marches and meetings like this one to commemorate his death. And the question has been raised, how far have blacks come towards realisation of King's dream of racial equality and economic justice."



And in the United Nations, Anti-Apartheid Committee Chairman Loslie Herriman of Nigeria paid his own tribute....and asked delegates to pay theirs.



HARRIMAN: "May the soul of our great and beloved Dr. Martin Luther King rest in peace, even though we are yet to achieve his goal of freedom for all human beings, and be able to sing with him in his grave 'We shall overcome'. May I now invite all to rise and observe a minute of silence in memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King."



While the nation mourned the death of civil rights leader 17 clergymen from throughout the United States issued an appeal for a new trial for the convicted murderer of Dr. King, James Earl Ray. He pleaded guilty to Dr. King's killing, but he later said he was coerced into making the admission. He is now serving a 99 years jail sentence.

Background: Ten years after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Americans marked his death with ???mbre memorial services and peaceful southern city, 2,000 mourners gathered for a march to the small motel where he was shot down by a sniper. And in his home town, his family also paid their own tributes. Kenley Jones of the National Broadcasting Company incorporated reports.
