  • Description

At Buckingham Palace London May 9 several thousand guests including Commonwealth leaders in London attending the Commonwealth Conference hoisted umbrellas and hastened across the royal lawns for shelter thus proving once again that where there is an English garden party there is rain.

The downpour came suddenly after a day of sultry weather. The Queen and Duke chatted on the lawn to the guests - Mr. Nehru and Dr. Nkrumah looked at home in the warmth of the day, Mr. Macmillan tall and smiling, and the other Commonwealth leaders with their delegations.

A warning rumble in the heavens and down tumbled the shower. Up went the umbrellas as the guests swept off the lawn in search of the diplomatic tea tent, the main tea pavilion or under the trees. One or two squeezed into the sentry boxes. In 20 minutes the sky was blue again.
