The Deputy Ruler and Prime Minister of Qatar has ousted his cousin as Emir of the Arabian Gulf State. Qatar Radio broadcast the news that Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad Al-Thani had taken over power early today (Tuesday) -- reportedly with the support of the ruling family, the armed forces and the people.
He ousts his cousin, Sheikh Ahmed Bin Ali Al-Thani, who is reported to be on a hunting holiday in Iran. The Qatar Radio broadcast said the situation was calm and made no mention of any violence.
Our library film of the two personalities at the centre of this latest Arab power struggle was shot in Qatar two years ago -- when Sheikh Ahmed and Sheikh Khalifa welcomed Gulf State rulers to a conference on unity.
