A prison blaze in the United States killed 42 people on Sunday (26 June). Thirty four prisoners and eight visitors died in the fire during visiting time at the Maury County jail in Columbia, Tennessee. Police believe the fire was started deliberately. It is thought to have begun in a padded cell occupied by a young convict who although seriously burnt, survived, and is now in hospital. The cell was in a part of the jail used to house mentally disturbed prisoners. For hours after the blaze fire officials couldn't say how many of the dead were inmates and how many visitors. Joe Cook of Channel Four News reports.
