  • Description

THE SCOTTISH RACING DRIVER JIM CLARK WON THE BRITISH GRAND PRIX TODAY (SATURDAY). THE VICTORY KEEPS HIM AT THE TOP OF THIS YEAR'S WORLD MOTOR RACING CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE. HE HAS NOW 36 POINTS. GRAHAM HILL OF BRITAIN CAME IN SECOND AND NOW HAS 23. JOHN SURTEES OF BRITAIN, THE CURRENT CHAMPION, WAS THIRD.

CLARK HAD TO NURSE HIS BADLY MISFIRING LOTUS CAR TO A THRILLING VICTORY - HIS FOURTH THIS SEASON. HILL IN A BRM TRAILED ONLY 100 YARDS BEHIND, HAVING SET A NEW LAP RECORD ON THE LAST LAP OF 1 MIN 32.2 SECONDS. SURTEES, DRIVING THE 12-CYLINDER FERRARI FOR THE FIRST TIME, SUPERBLY MASTERED THE CORNERS TO TWICE OVERTAKE MIKE SPENCE OF BRITAIN, THE NUMBER TWO LOTUS DRIVER, WHO GOT IN FOURTH.

ANOTHER SCOTTISH DRIVER, JACKIE STEWART WAS FIFTH IN THE SECOND BRM AND DAN GURNEY OF THE UNITED STATES FINISHED SIXTH IN A BRASHAM. RITCHIE GINTHER OF THE UNITED STATES, IN A JAPANESE HONDA, LEFT ALL THE OTHER CARS BEHIND THROUGH SHEER SPEED AT THE START BUT WAS NOT SO SUCCESSFUL ON THE CORNERS. EVENTUALLY HE HAD TO GIVE UP THROUGH MECHANICAL TROUBLE.

THE RACE AT SILVERSTONE IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE WAS OVER A 240-MILE (385-KMS) COURSE OF 80 LAPS.
