  • Description

A one-million dollar factory fire in Sydney, Australia on Sunday (7 October) destroyed three buildings and very nearly killed one of the firemen. Officer Denis Doestine narrowly escaped injury when a wall collapsed. High winds fanned the flames which raced through a series of adjoining tyre factories and warehouses.

SYNOPSIS: The blaze was a fire fighter's nightmare. Gale force winds whipped the flames through three adjoining buildings, including a large bicycle factory. There was little hope of saving the structure, but fire crews worked to keep the blaze contained. Suddenly, near-tragedy as a wall gave way.

Only a warning shout from a colleague saved Doestine from being crushed, and his narrow escape obviously shook him.

Doestine was taken to hospital. There he was treated for cuts and shock -- and released shortly afterwards.
