    President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, arrived in Rome on Thursday (16 June) for two days of talks with Italian leaders. Mr. Kaunda, who is on his way home from the Commonwealth Conference in London, will also have an audience with Pope Paul.

    SYNOPSIS: First, President Kaunda went to the Quirinale Palace, where he had lunch with the Italian President, Signor Giovanni Leone. At the lunch, President Leone hailed the Zambian leader as the spokesman of the deepest aspirations of the people of southern Africa for liberation and equality. President Leone also said that President Kaunda's visit opened up new prospects for cooperation between Italy and Zambia. Later President Kaunda had talks with the Italian Prime Minister, Signor Giulo Andreotti. They discussed southern African developments and possible economic aid for Zambia.

    Italy, has become increasingly involved in the industrial development of Third World countries. After his talks with President Leone, President Kaunda, a devout Christian, was due to have a short audience with Pope Paul before flying back to Lusaka.
