  • Description

AT TEN O'CLOCK THIS MORNING, (WEDNESDAY) THE FIRST OF BRITAIN'S ORDINARY CITIZENS ENTERED THE 'HALL OF KINGS' AT WESTMINSTER PALACE TO PAY THEIR LAST RESPECTS TO SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL. THE HOMAGE, AT THE OPENING OF THE THREE DAY LYING-IN-STATE PERIOD, BEGAN AN HOUR EARLIER WHEN THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. HAROLD WILSON, FILED PAST THE BIER IN A TRIBUTE TO THE DEAD STATESMAN.

IN THE HOUR BEFORE THE HALL WAS OPENED TO THE PUBLIC THE LEADERS OF BRITAIN'S THREE POLITICAL PARTIES HEADED A LINE OF MEMBERS OF BOTH HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT. THEN CAME MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL HOUSEHOLD AND FINALLY, THE STAFF OF THE PALACE OF WESTMINSTER -- A PALACE WHICH HAD BEEN ALMOST DOMINATED BY THE LATE SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL OVER THE PAST HALF-CENTURY.

THE FIRST PEOPLE TO MOVE INTO WESTMINSTER HALL, ALONG THE PARALLEL LINES OF CARPET FLANKING THE BIER, HAD MAINTAINED AN ALL-NIGHT VIGIL TO BE AMONGST THE FIRST TO PAY HOMAGE. WRAPPED UP WELL AGAINST THE CHILL WINTER NIGHT, THEY WAITED PATIENTLY IN A QUEUE THAT EXTENDED AROUND THE FRONT AND SIDE OF THE BUILDING.

DURING THE NEXT THREE DAYS THE 'HALL OF KINGS' WILL BE OPEN FOR 23 HOURS A DAY TO ENABLE THE PUBLIC TO SAY 'FAREWELL' TO SIR WINSTON, WHO IS TO BE ACCORDED A STATE FUNERAL ON SATURDAY.

(SHORTLY AFTER MIDDAY THE QUEUE OF PEOPLE OUTSIDE WESTMINSTER HALL WAITING TO PAY THEIR LAST RESPECTS TO SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, EXTENDED FOR NEARLY THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE).
