  • Description

Latest reports from the Rhone valley area of southern France, say flood waters have stopped rising, and are subsiding in some districts. Low lying areas surrounding Avignon have been badly affected, and the ancient city itself has suffered much damage. Sappers of the French Army were using small boats Oct 9 to evacuate people marooned on the completely isolated river islands of Piot and Barthelasse.

Elsewhere in the region, reports are still coming in of loss of life, crops, fars stock, and disruption of road, rail and telephonic communication.

The municipality of Montignac has begun a fund to aid victims of the deluge, and have appealed to tourists who have enjoyed the once beautiful countryside.

Weather experts say the sever a flooding now affecting many parts of Europe will probably end as one of the worst in history.
