  • Description

The invasion of Portuguese Timor by proIndonesan forces was greeted in Sydney by demonstrations outside the Indonesian embassy.

Banner waving supporters of the leftwing Fretilin movement in Timor picketed the embassy shouting slogans protesting the attack on the capital, Dili.

(Indonesian gunboats were reported to have shelled Dili and 1000 paratroopers followed up the attack. Fretilin, which was in full control of the capital, withdrew to the hills and vowed to fight a guerilla war against the proIndonesian forces.

The Indonesian Foreign Minister, Mr Malik, said Indonesian units had taken part in the Dili invasion at the invitation of the proIndonesian Timorese faction, Apodeti.)
The Sydney demonstrators called on the caretaker Government, led by Mr Fraser, to support truce moves via the United Nations and to immediately announce Australia's support for free determination of the wishes of the Timorese people.

Police were called to the embassy but there was no violence.
