    MR. VAN'T LEVEN, DIRECTOR OF THE UNITED NATIONS PROJECT CONCERNING LAKE CHAD, HAS BEEN STAYING IN YAOUNDE TO DISCUSS THE SCHEME WITH THE CAMEROUN AUTHORITIES.

    THE UNITED NATIONS' SPONSORED PROJECT INVOLVES FOUR COUNTRIES: CAMEROUN, CHAD, NIGER AND NIGERIA. THE SCHEME INVOLVES MAKING AN INTENSIVE STUDY OF LAKE CHAD TO ASSESS IT AS A RESERVOIR, AND TO SEE HOW AGRICULTURE AND FISHING COULD BE DEVELOPED IN THE REGION.

    FUNDS FOR THE PROJECT ARE BEING PROVIDED BY THE UNITED NATIONS, BUT EACH COUNTRY WILL PAY LOCAL EXPENSES. THE U.N. CONTRIBUTION WILL ALSO PAY TO TRAIN AFRICAN TECHNICIANS TO HELP THE STUDY. THE UNITED NATIONS FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANISATION (F.A.O.) IS TO PROVIDE 15 EXPERTS TO WORK ON THE PROJECT AND MORE EXPERTS WILL COME FROM THE UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANISATION (U.N.E.S.C.O.).

    THE INTENSIVE STUDY PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO TAKE ABOUT THREE YEARS.

    WHEN DUTCH-BORN MR. VAN'T LEVEN LEFT YAOUNDE HA WAS ACCOMPANIED TO THE AIRPORT BY MR. EFFON, DIRECTOR OF NATURAL RESOURCES IN THE MINISTRY OF ECONOMICS AND PLANNING.
