  • Description

Australia's Margaret Court, Wimbledon champion in 1963 and 1965 and top seed for this year's championship today (Monday) survived a first set upset to win her quarter-final match against West Germany's Helga Neissen
Blonde Miss Neissen, eighth seed for the Women's singles, was beaten by Mrs Court in the final of the French Open Championship earlier this year. She tried valiantly to reverse that result today, and succeeded in taking the first set 8-6, but then faded badly as her opponent found her form.

Mrs Court, now quoted as even money favourite for the title, had trouble with her service in the opening stages. Miss Neissen took advantage of this to break service and take a 5-3 lead in the first set. Mrs Court saved two set points, drew level, and then went ahead as the West German marred some brilliant winners with a series of errors. But Miss Neissen fought bravely for another service break and went on to take the set as Mrs Court served a double fault.

The possibility of a form reversal almost as dramatic as Roger Taylor's victory over top seed Rod Laver on Saturday faded, however, as Mrs Court tightened her play. The hard-hitting Australian allowed herself no more mistakes and swept through to win the next 12 games and the match.

Mrs Court will meet American Rosemary Casals in one semi-final. The other will be between another American, former champion Mrs Billie-Jean King, and the unseeded former French professional, Miss Francoise Durr.
