    BELGIAN RIOT POLICE AND PARATROOPS TODAY (TUESDAY) MOVED INTO THE MINING AREA OF GENK IN NORTHERN BELGIUM TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER TROUBLE AMONG STRIKING MINERS. YESTERDAY TWO MEN DIED IN CLASHES BETWEEN RIOTING MINERS AND POLICE TRYING TO RESTORE ORDER.

    THE MINERS AGAIN DEMONSTRATED TODY AT THE ZWARTBERG MINE, SMASHING OFFICE WINDOWS.

    POLICE SURROUNDED THE COLLIERY - NOW CLOSED BY THE STRIKE - AND HAD TO USE RIFLE BUTTS IN AN EFFORT TO QUELL THE DISTURBANCE. PARATROOPS STOOD BY DURING THE ACTION. TWO REGIMENTS OF SOLDIERS HAVE BEEN MOBILISED TO ASSIST POLICE IN THE AREA.

    THE DISTRICT TOOK ON THE APPEARANCE OF A BATTLEFIELD AS ARMY TRUCKS AND ARMOURED CARS MOVED THROUGH STREETS LITTERED WITH BRICKS, STONES AND PITPROPS CARRIED BY THE MINERS DURING THEIR RIOT.

    IN THE BELGIUM PARLIAMENT TODAY THE FLEMISH NATIONALIST PARTY WAS ACCUSED OF INCITING THE TROUBLE IN THE GENK REGION.

    THE MINERS ARE ON STRIKE IN PROTEST AGAINST THE PROJECTED CLOSURE OR UNECONOMICAL PITS IN THE AREA IN OCTOBER. GENK IS IN THE CENTRE OF A MAINLY FLEMISH-SPEAKING AREA OF NORTHERN BELGIUM, BUT LANGUAGE DIFFERENCE TO HAVE BEEN ONLY A SECONDARY CAUSE OF THE TROUBLE YESTERDAY AND TODAY.
