  • Description

In his interview given by President of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, to Director of TV Zagreb, Ivo Bejanic, replaying to the question concerning his aspect of the international situation, the President said that "he is no optimist". He continued:
"The situation is not good. We enter the new 1970 with the heavy burden of all possible conflicts and unsolved problems in the world. Furthermore, I even do not see enough good will with those most responsible for the solution of international problems, on whom the question of war or peace depends, and this is what worries most.

"Let us taken only Vietnam. The United States of America promised and is keeping promising to end it. It is thought, as it appears, that it will end when one shall be victorious. In this way it shall not end, but only escalated.

"In the Middle East, the situation is ever more worsening. That is not an armistice lasting there, but a permanent war. They are fighting, airforce is bombing, victims falling, a constant war is being waged. Allegedly sort of armistice, but there is no armistice. Israel does not show with any declaration, nor does she imply any flexibility nor abatement. On the contrary, she increases her demands. It is overtly said today in Israel that the conquered Arab territories are theirs. This says Golda Meir, P.M. This declaration is a very weighty one. How can there be real possibilities for the solution of the Near East crisis, when Israel representatives point out that there is not withdrawal from the territories they conquered.

"In talk for the solution of the Near East crisis in which participate on one side the USA and on the other the Soviet Union, too little has been done up to now to make, at least one pace forwards, on the base of the Resolution adopted in the Security Council two years ago.

"You know my statement I recently gave on the Near East crisis in which I put things somewhat sharper. I said every nation, when he security, independence and territorial integrity are assailed - has the right to use those means considered most efficient.

"I do not believe that in the near future there should be a new conflict, a war. Only if Israel should consider that would be better to do it sooner than later, due to the fact that Arab countries are getting stronger, that they are more numerous and that they are ever more showing their know-how with the arms they have. Thus, the occupation of Arab territories by Israel and the increasing pungent crisis in the Near East, which is very near to us, must worry us, too. It is not excluded that we might have next year many difficulties with this problem"
