AT A MASS EVENING MEETING APRIL 10, AT ST.NICHOLAS' ARENA, NEW YORK CITY'S SCHOOL TEACHERS?

  • Description

AT A MASS EVENING MEETING APRIL 10, AT ST.NICHOLAS' ARENA, NEW YORK CITY'S SCHOOL TEACHERS VOTED TO STRIKE FOR HIGHER PAY. THE UNITED FEDERATION OF TEACHERS' PRESIDENT, CHARLES COGEN, PLEADED WITH THE FIVE THOUSAND TEACHERS TO POSTPONE THEIR STRIKE, BUT THEY REFUSED. DEFYING A LAW UNDER WHICH ANY PUBLIC EMPLOYEE IS AUTOMATICALLY DISMISSED FOR STRIKING, THEY VOTED TO STRIKE BY A MARGIN OF ONLY 313 VOTES. AFTER THE VOTE COUNTING MR.COGEN PLEDGED FULL SUPPORT OF THE FORTY-THOUSAND STRONG UNION FOR THE NEW YORK TEACHERS.

UNDISMAYED BY A WARNING FROM THE SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT THAT IF THEY DID NOT REPORT FOR DUTY AS USUAL THEY WOULD BE DISMISSED, THE TEACHERS STUCK TO THEIR DECISION, AND SOME TEN THOUSAND TURNED UP TO PICKET THE CITY'S SCHOOLS THE FOLLOWING DAY. HOWEVER, PARENTS HAD BEEN ADVISED BY THE AUTHORITIES THAT SCHOOLS WOULD BE OPEN, AND CONSEQUENTLY THE CHILDREN ATTENDED AS USUAL. THEY CROWDED INTO CLASSROOMS UNDER LITTLE OR NO SUPERVISION. THE RESULT, IN MANY CASES, WAS VIOLENCE AS THEY TIRED OF THEIR ENFORCED "STUDY PERIOD" AND BEGAN THROWING BOOKS, TOILET PAPER AND OTHER ARTICLES. THEY HAMMERED ON CARS, THREW STONES AND EGGS, AND CREATED GENERAL PANDEMONIUM. POLICE WERE CALLED TO DISPERSE THEM, AND TO SEND THEM HOME.

THE DISPUTE WITH THE BOARD OF EDUCATION - REPORTED SETTLED APRIL 18 OVER SALARY INCREASES. NEW YORK TEACHERS NOW RECEIVE FROM GBP1,700 A YEAR TO GBP3,080. THEY WERE ASKING FOR THE SCALE TO BE RAISED FROM GBP1,900 TO GBP3,400, AND THE BOARD HAD OFFERED THEM HALF THE DEMAND.
