  • Description

AMERICA'S CONTROVERSIAL XB-70 -- FORERUNNER OF THE SUPERSONIC AIRLINERS OF THE FUTURE --- MADE ITS HISTORIC MAIDEN FLIGHT YESTERDAY (MONDAY).

THE SIX JET PLANE SWEPT OVER THE MOHAVE DESERT IN AMERICA ON A BRIEF BUT CRUCIAL SUB-SONIC FLIGHT OF ONE HOUR AND FIVE MINUTES. IT IS SAID TO BE CAPABLE OF SPEEDS AROUND THREE TIMES THE SPEED OF SOUND.

FLAMES GUSHED FROM THE UNDERCARRIAGE AS THE WHEELS OF THE XB-70 TOUCHED DOWN ON THE LANDING STRIP BUT WERE FANNED OUT BY THE TIME THE BIG PLANE --- AVIATION'S HEAVIEST AIRCRAFT -- CAME TO A STOP ON THE RUNWAY.

OFFICIALS OF THE AIR FORCE AND NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION, BUILDER OF THE XB70, SAID THE SUCCESSFUL MAIDEN FLIGHT WAS THE FIRST STEP IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF FUTURE SUPERSONIC AIRLINERS THAT WILL FLY AT THREE TIMES THE SPEED OF SOUND.

THE XB70 IS DESIGNED TO FLY AT 2,000 MILES AN HOUR AND AT AN ALTITUDE OF 80,000 FEET. BUT YESTERDAY THE NORTH AMERICAN TEST PILOT AND HIS CO-PILOT FLEW THE PLANE AT ABOUT ONLY ONE-THIRD OF ITS TOP SPEED AND HALF ITS ALTITUDE CAPABILITY.

THE TROUBLE-PLAGUED XB70 HAS BEEN THE TARGET OF LONG CONTROVERSY AND HAS COST AMERICAN TAXPAYERS 1 1/2 BILLION DOLLARS.
