  • Description

"Flying Finn" Timo Makinen took the lead in the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Round Britain Rally tonight (15 November) after Porsche driver Bjorn Waldegaard of Sweden dropped out with mechanical trouble. The second day of the gruelling five day rally took the contestants into central Scotland.

Earlier today, Makinen was disqualified after reportedly going off the road during a special speed stage in Northeast England, but a further check by officials revealed that there had ben a mistake.

Waldegaard's retirement comes as a serve blow to the West German Porsche team, who are relying on success in this event to clinch the 1970 European championship for manufacturers.

Ice and snow have been taking their toll. Of the 200 competitors, over sixty have been forces to drop out. Among them is the Swede Tom Trana, who has won the event twice.

The rally is one of the most hotly contested for years. At stake are the European Championship for Manufacturers and the RAC Rally Championship for Drivers.

Porsche are leading in the championships with 27 points, but Alpine-Renault are a close second with 23 points.
