Background: One of the largest oilfields in Kuwait, Al-Burgan, was the scene of an explosion and fire on Sunday, (30 May). A well used for the injection of gas, suddenly burst into flame. No one was reported injured, but the rig-tower and other equipment were completely destroyed. Efforts got underway immediately to dig a relief well, which would help control the fire.

SYNOPSIS: An explosion and fire struck one of the rigs at the Al-Burgan oilfield in Kuwait on Sunday. A well, used in the injecting of gas, suddenly burst into flames, while one of the oil rigs was performing routine operations. No one was reported injured, but the rig-tower and other equipment nearby, were completely destroyed. Efforts were begun immediately to drill a relief well -- a necessary measure, if the fire is to be brought under control. The new well hopefully will draw off the gas and oil that feeds the fire. Al-Burgan is one of the largest oilfields in Kuwait.
