    FIREMEN CLEARED WRECKAGE AND PERSONAL EFFECTS FROM THE BURNED OUT HULK OF A SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINER AT ROME'S FIUMICINO AIRPORT ON SUNDAY (19 APRIL). AFTER FIRE GUTTED THE AIRCRAFT THE AIRCRAFT, A SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES DC-8, CAUGHT FIRE AS IT WAS TAXIING FOR TAKE-OFF BOUND FOR COPENHAGEN. SEVENTY-FIVE PASSENGERS AND CREW JUMPED TO SAFETY WHEN THE BLAZE BROKE OUT.

    ABOUT A DOZEN PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL WITH BURNS AND BRUISES.

    THE AIRLINER'S BRITISH CAPTAIN TOLD REPORTERS THAT FIRE STARTED WHEN AN ENGINE BLEW UP. THE FLAMES SPREAD ALONG THE LEFT WING AND ENVELOPED THE PASSENGER CABIN AND THE COCKPIT. THE PILOT RULED OUT SABOTAGE AS POSSIBLE CAUSE, HOWEVER.

    ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, ALL 64 PASSENGERS OF THE AIRCRAFT, WHICH WAS ON A FLIGHT FROM TOKYO, WERE OUT OF THE BLAZING CABIN IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. A RELIEF AIRCRAFT LEFT LATER WITH 35 OF THE PASSENGERS ABOARD. THE OTHER UNINJURED LEFT ON OTHER FLIGHTS.

    A FULL SCALE INVESTIGATION INTO THE FIRE IS TO BEGIN ON MONDAY (20 APRIL).
