  • Description

Austrian Niki Lauda in a Ferrari won the South African Grand Prix held on the tight Kyalami circuit on Saturday (6 March).

Lauda, the current world champion, led all the way in the race, but Britain's James Hunt in a McLaren finished less than two seconds behind Lauda.

Hunt's teammate, Jochen Mass of Germany finished third, nearly three-quarters of a minute behind Hunt.

Fourth in the 199 mile (320 kilometre) race was South African Jody Scheckter in a Tyrrell. His brother, Ian, driving another Tyrrell, was not so successful -- he crashed on the first lap.

Lauda now has a commanding lead in the world drivers' championship after also winning the Brazilian Grand Prix. He has 18 points, while his closest rivals, James Hunt and Patrick Depailler of France both have six points.

In Saturday's race, Lauda starter from second position on the grid, but quickly took the lead from Hunt and was never headed.

Hunt pushed his McLaren to the limits, but was unable to bridge the gap which at one stage reached about 10 seconds.

Lauda said after the race that one of his rear tyres had begun deflating in the closing laps, and this could have presented problems if he had to travel much further.
