  • Description

the simulated rescue in the pacific ocean off point mahgoo, california, started out with two men in a raft.

equipment kits were dropped to the men from low flying, lumbering cargo planes.

while the planes circled overhead, the men helped each other into their orange coloured survival suits, equipped with special harnesses...then inflated a large, helium-filled balloon.

up went the balloon...carrying a sturdy nylon cable. the cable is attached to the harnesses of their suits...and automatically disconnects the balloon when the pickup is finally made.

the men in the raft positioned themselves so their backs were in the direction of travel while they waited for the rescue plane..coming in at 500 feet and 160 miles an hour.

the force of the pickup is about the same as that of a parachute opening and has no ill effects on a trained man.

then the men were reeled in by a cable secured in the nose of the plane and hooped back to a winch near the tail.

officials believe the demonstration shows that the recovery system could be used in aerospace rescue operations and in the jungle warfare of viet nam.
