  • Description

A UNITED NATIONS EXPLORATORY TEAM, SENT TO AFRICA AT THE REQUEST OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT, BY THE SECRETARY-GENERAL U THANT, ON WEDNESDAY VISITED THE TOWNSHIP OF TSHANENI IN SWAZILAND. THE UNITED NATIONS TEAM, LED BY MR. M.E. CHACKO, IS VISITING SWAZILAND, BECHUANALAND, AND BASUTOLAND -- THREE BRITISH PROTECTORATES NOW MOVING TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE.

THE TEAM IS STAYING IN EACH OF THE THREE PROTECTORATES FOR ABOUT EIGHT DAYS. THE OBJECT OF THE VISIT IS TO REPORT ON ECONOMIC CONDITIONS.

ON ARRIVAL AT TSHANENI, THE TEAM WAS GREETED BY MR. L. ALDRED, WHO IS GENERAL MANAGER OF THE IRRIGATION PROJECT BEING CARRIED OUT THERE. WHILE IT IS JOURNEYING THROUGH SWAZILAND THE TEAM IS BEING ACCOMPANIED BY MR. R.F. OLDHAM, SENIOR ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEVELOPMENT AND FINANCE IN THE SWAZILAND GOVERNMENT.

THE FOUR-MAN TEAM WAS SHOWN AROUND THE VILLAGE AND TAKEN TO THE COTTON PLANTATIONS -- WHICH HAVE BECOME POSSIBLE ONLY THROUGH AN AMBITIOUS IRRIGATION SCHEME. THE TEAM MEMBERS ALSO WERE TAKEN TO THE WATERWORKS WHICH CONTROL THE IRRIGATION PROJECT.

A RECENT REPORT PUBLISHED ON THE SWAZILAND SCHEME EMPHASISES THE WIDE VARIETY OF AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITY THAT WILL BE POSSIBLE IN NEWLY IRRIGATED AREAS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. SUGARCANE AND RICE PLANTATIONS ARE ALREADY IN PRODUCTION -- AND FURTHER DEVELOPMENT IN THESE FIELDS IS ANTICIPATED.

WHEN IT HAS COMPLETED ITS WORK, THE TEAM WILL REPORT TO U THANT.
