  • Description

Foreign aid for refugees from the Israeli advance into the southern Lebanon continues to arrive in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

SYNOPSIS: The latest consignment of supplies for the refugees from the invasion arrived at Beirut airport on Monday (1 May).

This time, it was a planeload from the Saudi Arabian government, including 1,000 blankets, 3,000 tents and 3,000 carpets. The Saudi Charge d'Affaires in the Lebanon, Mr Abu Bakr Rafih, was at the airport to supervise their arrival.

An estimated 200,000 refugees fled the Israeli invasion. Some 40 percent settled near the port of Sidon. The rest went to Beirut. Now, with United Nations troops occupying two thirds of the areas seized by Israel, many refugees are drifting back to their homes. Many have no homes to go to. A Red Cross survey has estimated that 82 villages were damaged during the invasion, and six almost destroyed. Some rebuilding is underway, but aid is still vital for the thousand of homeless.
