  • Description

FLAMES, FANNED BY HIGH WINDS, RAGED AROUND A LINE OF CAGES CONTAINING FEAR-CRAZED LIONS, BEARS, COUGARS AND A TIGER IN GRIFFITH PARK ZOO, LOS ANGELES, RECENTLY. BEFORE THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT MORE THEN 200 ACRES HAD BEEN RAZED.

THE OUTBREAK WAS AT FIRST THOUGHT TO BE MINOR, BUT WHEN THE FORCE OF THE WIND INCREASED, AN EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED AND MORE THAN 200 FIREMEN WERE CALLED IN.

VISITORS TO THE ZOO WERE EVACUATED WHEN IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THE FIRE WAS LIKELY TO GET OUT OF HAND. AT ONE POINT IT WAS FEARED THAT THE MORE DANGEROUS ANIMALS WOULD HAVE TO BE DESTROYED - BUT ALTHOUGH THE FIRE CREPT TO WITHIN A FEW FEET OF THEIR CAGES THE FIRE-FIGHTING TEAMS WERE JUST ABLE TO CONTAIN THE FLAMES.
