  • Description

Thousands of Ugandans have filed past the perspex coffin in Mamirembe Cathedral in Kampala of Sir Edward Frederick Mutesa, the last Kabaka of Buganda, during the four days of his laying in state.

Popularly known as King "Freddie" of Buganda, he died in London in exile and poverty three years ago, and his remains were flown back to Uganda on the 31st March.

The First President of newly independent Uganda, Sir Frederick was banished from Uganda by former President Milton Obote in 1966, and the present Government of General Idi Amin, which in turn deposed Dr. Obote in a coup last January had the King's body exhumed from a North London cemetery. General Amin was among those who paid their respects at the Cathedral.

Sir Edward's body will lie in state in the Cathedral until Sunday 4th of April, when it will be laid to rest beside three previous Kabakas in the royal tombs at Kasubi, near Kampala.
