    Soviet President Leonid brezhnev and other senior members of the Kremlin leadership have paid their last respects to Angolan President Agostinho Neto who died in Moscow on Monday (10 September). Later the coffin carrying the late president was flown back to the Angolan capital of Luanda aboard a special flight of Angolan Airlines. Dr. Neto's effective deputy, Lucio Lara, went to Moscow to bring back the president's body, and while there he held talks with the Communist Party's senior ideologist Mikhail Suslov. Mr. Lara was considered a possible successor to Dr. Neto.

    SYNOPSIS: Senior Soviet leaders paid their last respects at the Angolan Embassy in Moscow, while Dr. Neto lay in state at the hospital where he died. The mourners were led by President Leonid brezhnev and Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko. Dr. ???, 56, went to Moscow on what was officially described as a friendly visit, and entered hospital. In an operation for hepatitis surgeons found he was suffering from cancer of the pancreas.

    Mr. Brezhnev and members of the Communist Party Politburo and Central Committee signed a condolence book after a minute's silence in honour of the later president. Prime Minister Mr. Kosygin is on a visit to Ethiopia and was expected to travel to Luanda for the funeral. Mr. Gromyko also signed the book.

    The Soviet leader paid tribute to Dr. Neto as an outstanding statesmen. On achieving independence from Portugal in 1975 he brought Angola firmly into the Soviet camp. As they left the embassy the mourners greeted the late President's widow, Mrs. Eugenia Neto.
