  • Description

The former Bolivian Minister of the Interior Antonio Arguedas, exiled after he handed over the "diary of Major Ernesto 'Che' Guevara" to the Cuban government in 1968, has arrived in Havana by official invitation.

Arguedas, who has been in Mexico since April 24 this year, arrived at Havana International Air terminal with his wife to be met by Cubans Minister of Foreign Relations Dr. Raul Roa, Major Losada and Che Guevara's father, architect Ernesto Guevara Lynch and his wife. Directors of the main informative bodies of Cuba were also at the airport.

In November 1964, Arguedas entered the Bolivian Government after the late General Barrientos had overthrown the existing government. As a Minister of State Arguedas sent Che Guevara's diary to Cuba because he said he was being asked by the American central Intelligence Agency to justify aggression against Cuba and other Latin American liberation movements.

While in Chile as an exile in July 1968, Arguedas was offered political asylum by the Cuban Revolutionary Government, but instead he travelled overseas to England and the United States. He later returned to Bolivia to present himself for trial, but after a reported attempt on his life Arguedas entered the Mexican Embassy in La Paz for political asylum. Forty-eight hours later he was granted safe-conduct to leave the country.
