  • Description

The United States Vice-President and Britain's Defence Secretary both arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The first to arrive in the Indonesian capital was American Vice-President Spiro Agnew, who later held talks with Indonesian leaders on American military aid to their country and the military situation in South-East Asia after the Vietnam ceasefire. The United States is expected to give a squadron of 333 jet trainers to the Indonesian Air Force.

Mr. Agnew also had economic talks with the Indonesians and had two meetings with President Suharto. The American Vice-President is currently on an eight-nation tour of South-East Asia which has already covered South Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Singapore. After Indonesia he planned to visit Malaysia and then the Philippines, not originally scheduled for his tour. Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines is being prepared as a reception centre for the repatriation of American prisoners of war expected to be released by North Vietnam soon.

Soon after Mr. Agnew's arrival, an aircraft of Britain's Royal Air Force brought the Defence Minister of that country, Lord Carringt for a three-day visit s guest of the Indonesian Department of Defence.

Lord Carrington later had meetings with the State Minister for Hankam Affairs and the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Mr. Adam Malik. Plans included a visit to Kalibata Heroes' Cemetery and the Lubang Duaya Sasmita Loka.

Lord Carrington, who has hold the office of Defence Minister since the establishment of Premier Edward Heath's Cabinet in June 1970, is in Indonesia to discuss Britain's defence posture in East Asia in the present decade.
