INTERVIEWER: "You are spokesman for PLO. What is the position of the Palestine Liberation Organisation towards united Nations resolutions?"



SHARIF: "The Palestinian revolution is not concerned with the Security Council decision to ceasefire. The Palestinian revolution has started fighting to solve the contradiction with Zionism and in order to reach a certain aim, which is establishing a democratic state in Palestine. We have started fighting since 1965 and we will continue fighting until we get to our aims. The Palestinian movement also is not concerned with talks or negotiations of any kind with the Israeli enemy. We have waged our peoples' war and we will continue it until the establishment of the democratic state in Palestine. Of course, for twenty years the Palestinian people try all kinds of diplomatic and political challenge. Finally, we have resorted to arms in order to get our aim which it was proved to us will not be obtained by peaceful or diplomatic means."

Background: The Palestine Liberation Organisation (P.L.O.) which represents the main Arab commando groups -- announced on Monday night (October 22) that it would continue the fight against Israel despite the United Nations ceasefire resolution.

The Palestine commands stand to lose most in any discussion of peace on the basis of the Security Council's resolution 242 of November 1967. This refers to giving territory captured in the 1967 conflict back to Egypt, Jordan and Syria, but would not return land claimed by the Palestinians, or create the State they have been fighting to establish.

In its conditional acceptance of the ceasefire cell on Monday, Israel made a point of specifying that it must include "irregular forces", presumably the Arab commandos.

Observers said it might be difficult to control some elements among the commandos, but it seemed likely that the main body of the movement would have to go along with any decision by the key Arab states.

Despite this, a Palestinian Liberation Organisation spokesman, Bassam Abu Sharif, told newsmen in Beirut the L.P.O. would continue fighting until it had achieved its aims.

SYNOPSIS: The short-lived Middle East ceasefire found no support from the Palestine Liberation Organisation - -the P.L.O. -- at its base in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday morning. While residents were busily catching up on the latest war developments, leaders of the P.L.O. were outlining their defiance of the United Nations ceasefire resolution.

The Arab commandos announced they would go on fighting -- and they attacked Israeli positions on Tuesday nigh to prove it. Their chief spokesman is Bassam Abu Sharif.
