  • Description

In this first tournament game since he won the title last April, world chess champion Anatoly Karpov of the Soviet Union defeated Hungarian Lajos Portish on Monday (2 June).

Karpov and Portish - the Hungarian Grandmaster - played in the opening round of the annual International Vidmar Memorial Tournament in Portoroz, Yugoslavia.

The 24-year-old Russian had the white pieces in the four-hour game, played to the Slav defence. Portish resigned after taking a pawn sacrifice. He had overlooked the loss of his rook on the next move.

The game was won by Karpov in 32 moves.
